Script-Writing & Stage Management: NVLSP Benefit Reception

By on Monday, March 2, 2020

From 2009-2019, Steppingstone LLC assisted with the annual Benefit Reception organized by the National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP). This event raised tens of thousands of dollars annually to support their work assisting veterans, while also spotlighting the valuable work of lawyers and advocates who assisted veterans in obtaining their disability benefits.

One of our key roles in this event involved drafting nearly all of the program scripts, recruiting several of the celebrity emcees, and managing the stage on the night of the event. There were often last minute script changes, adjustments to make to the program, and even an emcee switch when an anchor was called away for breaking news coverage.

Ami Neiberger-Miller worked with several emcees, including Wolf Blitzer from CNN, Courtney Kube from NBC News, Jeanne Meserve (formerly of CNN), Martha Raddatz from ABC, Barbara Starr from CNN, Jake Tapper from CNN, veterans advocate Kayla Williams, and Judy Woodruff, anchor of PBS Newshour. The very first year of the event, it was emceed by George Stephanopoulos from ABC. She also had to work with the technical staff for the event, ensuring that videos ran at the correct time, and that lighting and sound were functioning as planned. She drafted runs of show to give to presenters and awardees, so they would understand the program order.

Being successful in this event over the years required lots of preparation, a willingness to work hard, and a commitment to getting it right, even if things did not always go quite as planned. This highly successful event has raised tens of thousands of dollars for NVLSP’s important efforts assisting veterans, while also recognizing key partners and advocates for their work.
