Media Pitching & Onsite Support: Event Helping Military Families Grieving Suicide Losses
Media pitching and on-site event support can be challenging due to the subject matter. In October 2014, Steppingstone LLC’s Ami Neiberger-Miller provided media relations support and on-site management for the TAPS National Military Suicide Survivor Seminar. This annual event brings together for care and healing hundreds of people grieving the death by suicide of a loved one who served in the Armed Forces.
Ami has written previously about the challenges in working with the news media on coverage of suicide and the emotional challenges of an event like this. It can be challenging to coordinate media coverage when an event deals with such a sensitive subject.
She issued a news release in advance of the event and also did advance pitching to secure coverage. Pitching included the unique challenges these families face as they recover after suffering a tragic loss, discussed how TAPS programs assist them, and mentioned current statistics about suicide in the military.
Stars & Stripes embedded a reporter for the entire three-day event, who wrote two lengthy pieces on the event and its camp program for children and published a photo gallery on the publication’s homepage. Ami also worked with reporters from local television station Bay News 9, another television station, and NPR affiliate WUSF.
