Toolkit: Boilerplate Press Releases, PR Help for Members

By on Thursday, March 20, 2014

The sister city movement links together hundreds of grassroots and autonomous local nonprofit organizations. To help its member organizations improve their public relations outreach, Sister Cities International issued a communications toolkit to assist them. Originally compiled on a CD for distribution at the annual conference and then distributed online the toolkit offered a wealth of advice and support.

The toolkit offered advice on working with the news media for state coordinators and local sister city volunteers and staff. Publicity ideas were offered, and there were tips on volunteer recruitment and how to manage a public relations committee (for organizations using a committee of volunteers).SCI-Disk

Boilerplate news releases and sample news releases helped sister city programs understand what type of format to use when contacting the media. A sample publicity plan and fill-in-the-blank plan helped them be more strategic in their outreach work. There were also sample plans for volunteer recruitment and fill-in-the-blank options.

Lessons learned by other sister city programs when reaching out to the media or creating a video were also shared in the toolkit on fact sheets. A fact sheet offered advice on how to make a booth or table at a community festival more interactive and engaging by using an interactive game.

The kit included a sample proclamation for use with local governments or partner organizations, and even a ten year anniversary sample proclamation. Sample PowerPoint presentations gave sister city programs branded materials that they could easily modify and use.

Advice on photography (even adult and youth legal releases for photography were included), logo usage, and a host of other issues were offered to help improve the capacity of local sister city programs. Providing tools and advice helped the local sister city programs brand and talk about what they were doing in similar ways and built the organization’s strategic capacity.
