Curriculum: Best-selling 4-H Horse Series Updated & Expanded

By on Monday, March 17, 2014

Situation: In 2003, the 4-H Cooperative Curriculum System was facing a crisis. A curriculum design team had fallen more than a year behind schedule after a key leader was no longer able to lead the project. The 4-H horse education series was woefully out of date, and facing a sunset deadline on its endorsements and certifications that would pull books from shelves. Without radical help, the project would never meet its printing deadline and thousands of young people who use the materials would be left without support and materials.

Solution: The National 4-H Cooperative Curriculum System hired Steppingstone LLC to manage the project, write curricula, design experiential learning activities, oversee pilot testing, and design the printed curriculum. Steppingstone LLC’s staff edited and dramatically expanded the drafts started by the original design team, edited activities as they came in from writers and design team members, correlated the curriculum with national learning standards, pilot-tested the activities at locations around the United States, shepherded the product through a national certification process, and graphically designed six printed books. Curricula was designed to be adaptable for individual and group use at the local level, with a focus on experiential “hands-on” activities.  HorseHelpersGuide

Results: The curriculum was certified for national distribution and the project was completed on time.
